Part 3 - Protect your address
Prevent getting listed on junk lists
- When
asked for your email address on website forms think about who you are
submitting these details to. Read their privacy policy and make an
informed choice. Perhaps you can use a throw away email account just
for this purpose. Use your real address for official communications or
if you trust the firm. Some websites may collect address and sell them
to spam list collectors
- NEVER give your real email address to guest books if it will be displayed to everyone. The problem is not that people will see it rather that email address harvesting software will
- Never
post messages to the Usenet or other news groups with your real
address. It is safer to use a throw away email account. By using such
an account any spam you receive goes to a non important mailbox
- When
signing up to services on websites you may be asked if you like to
receive special offer. It's probably wise to decline this offer. Many
of these offers are run by other companies so be careful.
- Learn how to access full email headers from your e-mail client. This is essential to report junk email so that can be traced. (guide coming soon)
- Read
End User License Agreements (EULA), privacy polices and Terms of
service agreements when you install software or sign up for a service
online. Otherwise you may agree that your email address will be
distributed to potential junk email lists.
- As mentioned earlier NEVER use any opt out options because they are generally fake and serve only to validate your address as being real.
